What Is A Vocal Producer?  Part 2

The work of a vocal producer is often overlooked in the process of producing and recording music.

Simply stated,

Vocal production is capturing the best vocal performance in line with a record producer’s sonic vision.

Let’s use this as a working definition and unpack the following 3 key ideas:

  1. CAPTURING
  2. BEST VOCAL PERFORMANCE
  3. PRODUCER’S SONIC VISION

CAPTURING

Vocal Production is first and foremost about getting the singer’s best delivery. Various techniques are used –

  • Vocal warm-ups
  • Knowing the artist – relationship, trust and safety brings freedom of expression and excellence.
  • Relaxing the artist, e.g. Good conversations, tea, reading the artist’s emotions,
  • Encouragement – coaching, motivating, inspiring and cheering on the artist
  • Creative Criticism – finding ways of correcting artist without making them feel insecure

A producer who employs these “CAPTURING” techniques is a great vocal producer. In part 3, we’ll look at some of the ways vocal producers help artists deliver their best performance.
